Ceramic is used in certain parts of clearomizers and atomizers. Ceramic has the advantage of withstanding high temperatures. Coils can also be used with porous ceramic. This means that the coil is no longer in contact with the cotton but directly with the ceramic. The resistive wire heats the ceramic soaked in e-liquid instead of the cotton. This means fewer dry hits and a much longer coil life.
