What is an e-cigarette?

How e-cigarette works

An e-cigarette or vaporiser consists of 2 main parts: a battery and a clearomiser.

The battery sends current to the clearomiser, in which a coil (twisted wire) heats up. The coil is wrapped with cotton soaked in aroma liquid, which is then transformed into vapor. Vaping consists of drawing in this vapor.

What is an e-cigarette made of?

An electronic cigarette consists of :

• a battery (box or MOD): a metal or plastic box containing a built-in or removable battery and electronics for adjusting voltage, wattage and so on. The battery stores the electrical energy needed to power the clearomiser. The maximum power of the battery is expressed in watts.
• a clearomizer: it includes a cotton-wrapped coil, a liquid tank and a mouthpiece called drip tip.

The choice of the clearomiser and coil is always linked to that of the battery. The wattage of the battery must match the resistance (in ohms) of the clearomiser. The coil is a disposable that needs to be replaced from time to time, as it clogs up over time. There are several types of vaping (direct draw, indirect draw), and therefore several types of clearomiser or atomizer or RDA or RTA, or RDTA, ...

What is e-liquid?

Role of e-liquid

The e-liquid is the element that creates the vapor in the e-cigarette. It's what gives your vape its flavour and contains the nicotine you need! When the e-liquid is heated by the coil, it becomes vapor at around 50 degrees Celsius: the vapor produced gives you the sensation of tobacco smoke.

Composition of e-liquids

The e-liquids are made up of 4 components:

• Propylene Glycol (PG): very fluid, it enables the aromas to be properly carried.
• Vegetable Glycerine (VG): more viscous and thicker, with a slightly sweet taste, it produces a lot of vapor.
• Flavouring: this is what gives the taste when vaping. There are many different flavours available in e-liquids, giving a multitude of different tastes. They are food flavourings adapted to vaping, natural flavourings or synthetic flavourings.
• Nicotine: Remember, nicotine is not carcinogenic (it's the burning of tobacco that's carcinogenic, and there's no combustion in e-cigarette)! You can choose from a range of nicotine strengths to suit your smoking habit (0, 3, 6, 12, 18, 20 mg/ml).

E-liquid flavours

There's a huge range of flavours to choose from. Depending on whether you're a beginner or an expert, you can choose from :

• single flavour e-liquids: fruit (red fruit, apple, strawberry, raspberry, pear, etc.), mint (fresh mint, polar mint, ice mint, chlorophyll mint, menthol, etc.), gourmand (caramel, coffee, vanilla, etc.), classic (tobacco flavour).
• complex liquids: with several different flavours (for example, a fruity initial taste and a biscuit finish), they are used more by regular vapers and experts

Which e-liquid should I choose?

There are a number of criteria to consider when making your choice:

• Check that the level of VG is appropriate for your device. Too much VG (thick liquid) in an unsuitable coil (without large liquid inlets) will burn the cotton and the coil, which will no longer be usable.
• If you're a beginner, single-aroma e-liquids are recommended: classic, mint or fruit. On the other hand, for experts, complex liquids are preferable.
• PG/VG ratio :
  - The higher the proportion of VG, the smoother the e-liquid, the more abundant the vapor but with less flavour, and you need a resistance of less than 1 ohm with wide e-liquid inlets for direct inhalation.
  - The higher the proportion of PG, the more fluid the e-liquid will be, with less vapor but more flavour. You need coils with small holes (otherwise the liquid will leak), greater than 1 ohm, for indirect inhalation.
  For beginners, we recommend a VG/PG ratio of 30/70 (30% VG) to 50/50 (50% VG maximum).
  For regulars and experts, we recommend 50/50 to 80/20.

What is shortfill / Mix and Vape?

The Mix 'N' Vape solution allows you to buy a large capacity e-liquid without nicotine ("shortfill") and add one or more nicotine shots (20mg/ml) to obtain a final mix with the desired nicotine strength.
The bulk of the shortfill e-liquids are not completely filled so that one or more nic shots can be added.

Mix and vape are generally overdosed in aroma (ZHC: Zero nicotine-High-Concentration), so that once diluted with one or two nicotine shot, the proportion of aroma is just right. Some shortfills are not overdosed, but you can add nic shot of the same flavour (usually 18 mg/ml). We offer these bottles in packs so you can choose your nicotine strength.

Why do Mix and Vape?

To have a lower cost price, for those with a high consumption of e-liquid.

The current European legislation TPD (Tobacco Products Directive) prohibits the sale of e-liquid with nicotine of more than 10ml. Shortfill is a good alternative to this restriction: it's a large (often 50 ml) bottle of ready-to-use nicotine-free e-liquid to which one or more nicotine shots are added. To reduce your cost for renewing e-liquids, sold in 10ml, we offer many e-liquids in the shortfill version.

What is DIY?

DIY or Do It Yourself involves creating your own e-liquid using separate ingredients: a base, a concentrated flavour and nicotine shots. DIY is mainly aimed at heavy e-liquid users who want to make their own mixes.
The main advantage is that you can create e-liquids at a lower cost, but you can also enjoy making them yourself by adjusting the proportions of the ingredients.

How to make a DIY e-liquid?

To prepare your mixes, you will need :

Appropriate equipment:
- Large empty bottles (100ml) for your mixes ;
- smaller empty bottles to carry your liquids;
- a syringe to measure your aroma dose;
- needles for your syringes, long enough to reach the bottom of the bottle.

Necessary liquids:
- a neutral base with no aroma or nicotine, made up of PG and VG;
- concentrated flavourings that will give your DIY liquid their taste;
- nicotine shot to obtain the desired nicotine strength;
We strongly advise against the use of additives.
